iata 2020 market snapshot

air cargo market snapshot from Iata

Vigorous Air cargo business produced $128.8 Billion in revenue in 2020. Capacity shortage with international travel restrictions and airline fleet reconfiguration, limiting passenger aircraft belly space lifts $/kg rates.

Increasing consumer trend to get products on-demand fast

The economic rebound from Covid shutdowns has been remarkable on several fronts related to global shipping and supply chain management. Foremost is the meteoric rise in container shipping rates as well as capacity dislocations.

Be it vessel wait times at destination ports, Suez Canal blockage from the Evergain, or the latest delay crunch caused by the temporary closure of the Port of Yantian in May 2021, increased stresses on global supply chains are the new normal. Ocean container rates have quadrupled from 2019 levels on many shipping routes critical to manufacturing enterprises and consumer re-supply efforts, thereby manifesting through price inflation of end user products. As of late, container rates when measured in dollars per kilogram of product shipped, are narrowing the spread between ocean cargo and air cargo significantly.

Cargo and passenger balance on delivering products

DInternational air cargo has experienced a market shift from traditional pre-covid 50/50 balance between passenger flight belly cargo and full freighter platform. Present market conditions have shifted to 70%+ full freighter with balance passenger flight belly cargo fluctuating and very sensitive to consumer booking variations.

International passenger flights remain well below pre-covid schedules. Depending on region, total available passenger flights and available belly cargo capacity is 60% below 2019 levels. Industry-wide cargo load factor in July 2021 grew by 9.5% compared to the same month in 2019, to reach 54.4%. This record-high for the month of July in any preceding year, shows market dynamics of demand continue to outstrip available air freight capacity.

Air cargo demand growth is substantially outpacing supply

The difference between passenger and cargo profitability is in the capacity dynamics. Traditionally, capacity increase would lead to lower pricing, yet with larger cargo airlines controlling bulk of market capacity and pricing the pricing is expected to remain high. Freighter demand in all sectors is exceeding supply, in spite of ramp up of conversion activities of passenger airliners and production of new freighters from OEM supply chains. Airlines with long haul platforms such as Boeing 767, 777 & 777, Airbus A330 & A340 are repurposing for internal freight requirements as well as selling excess airframes to third parties for subsequent conversion to meet current market demand.
